ODENSE: The clash between Viktor Axelsen and Alex Lanier was supposed to be the match of the day but the home star got sick and pulled out from the Denmark Open.

Olympic champion Axelsen lost 19-21 in a tight first game against Lanier of France and was trailing in the second before he vomitted and eventually gave up at 7-11 in the second round at the Jyske Bank Arena on Thursday (Oct 17).

Lanier, who shot to stardom after winning the Japan Open this year, will take on Singapore's Loh Kean Yew next.

Kean Yew defeated Lee Cheuk Liu of Hong Kong 9-21, 21-16, 21-14 in another second round match.

But second seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen brought cheer to the 3,000 over fans at home when they defeated Malaysia's Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King 21-14, 21-7 to set up a meeting against Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi of Japan.

In the mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin of Malaysia gave a good fight before going down 8-21, 23-21, 14-21 to second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin of China in the second round.
