Su Yin’s spunky show a highlight despite loss with Pang Ron in second round

Combining well: Su Yin and Pang Ron went down 8-21, 23-21, 14-21 to second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin of China.

ODENSE: Though she be but little, she is fierce.

That quote from Shakespeare best describes the spunk showed by the petite Cheng Su Yin before losing in the second round of the Denmark Open at the Jyske Bank Arena on Thursday.

Su Yin and her partner Hoo Pang Ron went down 8-21, 23-21, 14-21 to second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin of China.

After losing the opening game easily, one expected the Malaysians’ challenge to fizzle out quickly but they turned the tide in the second.

Su Yin and Pang Ron combined well to pile the pressure on their lanky and experienced opponents to steal one game.

“We did not fear our opponents but we knew their standard. The second game fightback against a top pair has certainly given me more confidence,” said Su Yin.

Pang Ron, who did well to cover the court with his attacking prowess said: “We were slow in the first game but switched to our fast-paced attacking in the second and it worked.

“I’m happy that Su Yin and I were able to complement each other well. I’ve worked on my physical condition in order to be a good support for my partner.’’

The improved showing of Pang Ron-Su Yin augurs well and adds depth to the Malaysian team as they already have established pairs like Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, and professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.
