PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Ng Qi Xuan’s plea for funds for her knee surgery has not fallen on deaf ears.
Qi Xuan turned to crowdfunding after needing up to RM30,000 surgery for a serious knee injury that she suffered in the women’s doubles semi-finals of the Malaysia Super 100 on Saturday.
The 24-year-old and Yap Rui Chen were on the verge of reaching the final when leading 22-20, 20-18 against Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee but Qi Xuan injured her knee and had to retire from the match.
She then took to social media to describe her injury and seek financial assistance from the public.
“The scan results are out and the results are torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), my lateral cruciate ligament (LCL) loosened and a little bit of bone stress fracture.
“To be honest, I was kind of shocked with the results as this is my first major injury. Actually, I wanted to get help from you all. Unfortunately, my insurance company does not cover my case.
“I will need around RM25,000 to RM30,000 for the surgery and hospital bills.
“My parents are currently retired and I have no income since I am not able to coach with my severely injured knee now.
“I’m writing in now to humbly get your help and will be very glad if I could really use a bit of your help to get back on my feet. It is not easy to be an independent player,” added Qi Xuan.
The public sympathised with the player’s plight and quickly responded by sending cash to her bank account.
The response was so overwhelming that the bank blocked her account due to safety concerns and Qi Xuan had to change to another bank account for the public to keep donating funds.
Meanwhile, Qi Xuan said that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have offered to help her with her rehabilitation process after the surgery.
