Penangites’ party as homesters smash down National U-16 Team C’ships title


Penang celebrate winning the boys' Under-16 National Team Championships title.

PETALING JAYA: It was joy for the home fans when Penang captured the National Under-16 Team Championships title after beating Melaka 2-1 in the final at the Penang Badminton Association (PBA) in Jelutong yesterday.

Kong Wei Xiang, who had won the boys’ singles title in the Junior Elite Tour Finals in June, gave Penang the lead after overcoming Curson Cheng 21-19, 21-16.

Melaka though fought back to draw level through Ungku Ameer-Syed Harraz in the boys’ doubles as they chalked up a 21-17, 21-18 victory over Khaw Kai Shyang-Low Quan Yi.

In the pivotal second boys’ singles, Louis Lee gave Penang the winning point after beating Wan Mohd Darwisy 21-15, 21-17 victory in 52 minutes.

In the girls’ team event, Perak emerged 2-1 winners over Kuala Lumpur to take the title.

Ong Xin Ru gave Kuala Lumpur the first point in the girls’ singles with a 21-18, 21-18 win over Mun Lee in an hour-long duel.

A. Baavanya-Balqis Safia Zahra Mohd Zain though gave Perak a way back when they secured a hard- fought 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 win over Teoh Sue Mei-Lee Weng Yan in the girls’ doubles.

Nur Aina Maisarah Mohd Hatta then ousted Wong Au Mel 19-21, 21-9, 21-12 in the second girls’ singles to give Perak the title.

Meanwhile, Selangor scored a double in the Under-12 category when they claimed both the girls’ and boys’ title.

In the Under-12 girls’ final, Selangor beat Putrajaya 2-1 while Selangor defeated Kedah 2-0 in the boys’ title decider.

BOYS

Under-16: Penang bt Melaka 2-1

Under-12: Selangor bt Kedah 2-0.

GIRLS

Under-16: Perak bt Kuala Lumpur 2-1.

Under-12: Selangor bt Putrajaya 2-1.
