PETALING JAYA: Athletes need to have the right character to succeed.
One of newly appointed women’s doubles coach Rosman Razak’s first tasks is to identify the players in the team that have the right mentality.
The players currently under evaluation are Teoh Mei Xing, Go Pei Kee, Lee Xin Jie, Tan Zhing Yi, Cheng Su Hui, Amanda Yap, Chan Wen Tse, Chong Jie Yu, Vanessa Ng and Vannee Gobi.
They have been joined by Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting, who will be starting their senior careers after moving up from the junior team.
Only national No. 1 and world No. 7 Pearly Tan. M. Thinaah’s position is secure in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) while the others need Rosman’s approval to remain at least in the women’s doubles team.
“I will have to analyse many factors to determine which of these players are suitable to play together,” said Rosman.
“I need to see which players have the right character and the mentality of a champion. I need a bit of time as these are young players. I also have to come up with the best partnerships.”
Rosman stressed that his job was to make sure the players have the right direction or aim.
“I want them to know what direction they want or their aim. There’s no point coming for training just for the sake of it,” said Rosman.
“My job is to point them to the right direction. I have been tasked with developing these young players and we need to work together.
“For now, I have told them not to worry about their partnerships but to focus on their individual game.
“I will finalise the best partnerships by early next year. I need to observe the players during training and tournaments first.”
Rosman acknowledged that the players will need some time to adapt to his training methods.
“Every change needs time to implement.
“I don’t expect things to change very fast,” said Rosman.
“This applies not just for the players but for me too. At the same time, we cannot take too long.
“It’s my job to make this process faster and for the players used to my methods easily.”
