PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles shuttler Cheng Su Hui is out to show new coach Rosman Razak that she deserves to keep her spot in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The 21-year-old Su Hui is under evaluation along with nine of her teammates and has the opportunity to prove her worth when she competes with Lee Xin Jie in the Malaysian International Series starting today in Johor.
“Playing badminton for my country was a childhood dream for me and I don’t want to lose my position in BAM,” said Su Hui.
“The pressure is on me and I do feel a bit scared as I really love badminton and this is the best place to develop in this sport as there are top notch facilities here.
“I’ve seen some of my teammates dropped from BAM and I’m sad to see them leave but this also motivates me to work harder.
“All I can do now is to give my best in training and tournaments. I want to prove my worth to coach Rosman,” added Su Hui.
Su Hui does not need to look further than twin sister and former partner Cheng Su Yin for inspiration.
Su Hui won bronze in the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games with Su Yin but the latter was deemed more suitable to play in the mixed doubles and the duo were split.
Su Yin has gone on to form a promising partnership with Hoo Pang Ron with the pair now ranked No. 25 in the world.
Su Hui is proud of her sister’s progress and hopes to follow in her footsteps.
“I’m very proud to see my sister progressing well in the mixed doubles. She inspires me to do well too,” said Su Hui.
“For now, I will be competing in the back-to-back International Series events in Malaysia and Vietnam (Nov 19-24) and I hope to win a title.”
Su Hui was combined with the 20-year-old Xin Jie in August and the pair are still finding their feet.
The duo’s best performance was in the Malaysian International Challenge in September where they made it into the last eight.
Meanwhile, Rosman, who started work in BAM last week, will also be keeping a close eye on Teoh Mei Xing, Go Pei Kee, Tan Zhing Yi, Amanda Yap, Chan Wen Tse, Chong Jie Yu, Vanessa Ng and Vannee Gobi.
All the pairs will be competing in the Malaysian tourney except for Mei Xing-Pei Kee, who will play next in the World Tour Super 300 Syed Modi International from Nov 26-Dec 1 in Lucknow.
