PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Loo Bing Kun-Ho Lo Ee pulled off a huge upset over top seeds and home favourites B. Sumeeth Reddy-Sikki Reddy to reach the quarter-finals of the Syed Modi International.

Bing Kun-Lo Ee, who are ranked 102nd in the world, fought brilliantly to come away with 19-21, 21-16, 21-13 win over the world No. 33 Indians in 50 minutes in Lucknow yesterday.

It was a breakthrough for the youngsters as they made it into the last eight of a World Tour Super 300 competition for the first time.

Bing Kun-Lo Ee, who only combined early this year, will take on another Indian pair, fifth seeds Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto next for a place in the semi-final.

The duo’s best performance previously came in the Super 100 Indonesian Masters where they made it into the quarter-final.

Bing Kun partnered Cheng Su Yin briefly last year and won the Malaysian International Series together.

Meanwhile, it was also joy for independent player Wong Tien Ci when he made it into the last eight in both the men’s and mixed doubles.

In the mixed doubles, Tien Ci combined with Lim Chiew Sien to oust India’s Shaik Gouse-K. Maneesha 21-16, 21-18. The pair will next face Chinese qualifiers Liao Pinyi-Huang Kexin.

Tien Ci had a tougher time in the men’s doubles when he and Lim Tze Jian had to dig deep to beat Thailand’s Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn-Worrapol Thongsanga 21-19, 11-21, 22-20.

India’s Roy Pruthvi-K. Sai Pratheek stand in Tien Ci-Tze Jian’s way next.

World junior champions Aaron Tai-Kang Kai Xing also made it into the quarter-final after overcoming Taiwan’s Po Li-wei-Lu Chen 21-16, 13-21, 21-14 and will play India’s Ishaan Bhatnagar-Sankar Prasad next.

In the women’s doubles, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing brushed past India’s Gayatri Rawat-Mansa Rawat 21-7, 21-14 to set up a meeting against second seeds Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand.

In the men’s singles, it was the end of the road though for Justin Hoh after he lost 12-21, 19-21 to India’s Ayush Shetty.
