Wei Chong-Kai Wun vow to break into world’s top 10 after falling short this year

Impressive: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun had a commendable 2024 season with their best result coming at the Super 1000 Indonesian Open in June where they made it to the final.

PETALING JAYA: National men’s doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are aiming high for 2025 as the pair wants to be in the top 10 next year.

The duo had a commendable 2024 season with their best result coming at the Super 1000 Indonesian Open in June where they made it to the final but lost to China’s Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang.

However, Kai Wun feels the only final appearance in Indonesia didn’t meet their expectations for the year, after also facing inconsistency that saw them fail to qualify for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.

“We had performed better compared to two years ago but the progress has not been what we expected it to be.

“We only managed to get into one tournament final while we lost other tournaments, especially in the quarter-finals.

“Next year, we will focus more and hope to achieve success in every tournament that we participate in.

“That’s why we are aiming to break into the top 10 because we could not reach our target this year of being in the top 12,” said Kai Wun.

The 24-year-old Kai Wun, who is world No. 14 with Wei Chong, was disappointed that they did not earn a ticket to the World Tour Finals.

Early exits in their last three tournaments - Denmark Open, Japan Masters and China Masters – didn’t help them qualify but Kai Wun wants to put that in the past and instead focus on the first tournament for 2025, which will be the Malaysian Open from Jan 7-12.

“The mistakes at the last few tournaments were our own fault, we wanted to make it to the Finals so bad that we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves.

“We want to start fresh. At the Malaysian Open, we need to focus one step at a time,” he said.
