Indonesian legend Herry could be frontrunner for doubles hotseat

PETALING JAYA: Indonesian legend Herry Iman Pierngadi, better known as Herry IP, could be the top choice to take over the national men’s doubles coaching position.

Although national coaching director Rexy Mainaky praised Herry’s credentials, the final decision will have to come from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on the new coach’s appointment.

“It’s not just me who knows about Herry IP’s quality as a coach, everyone knows that.

“But the final decision will have to come from the management. We will have to see many aspects of the position and present our views before any decision is made,” Rexy said at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.

Rexy had trained under the Indonesian legend during his time as a player. Herry has also trained Olympic champions Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan (Sydney 2000) and Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido (Beijing 2008).

Herry’s name was among the mix of candidates to fill the role to replace Tan Bin Shen, who will leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after the Malaysian Open next week.

Besides Herry, Rexy revealed that he has been in contact with former national players Yap Kim Hock, Tan Boon Heong, Koo Kien Keat and Lee Wan Wah, but they had declined the offer due to other commitments.

“I did reach out to a few former national players as well. But Boon Heong is running his own academy, while Kien Keat is focused on his role as a badminton icon, and Wan Wah is coaching in Japan,” he said.

BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam said the final decision will be made in two week’s time, and could be revealed during the Malaysian Open from Jan 7-12.

The BAM could also make the call during their council meeting on Jan 11.
