BUKIT JALIL: Men’s doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani suffered a shock defeat in the opening round of the Malaysian Open.

The world No. 3 pair went down 15-21, 21-9, 18-21 to Denmark’s world No. 26 Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (Jan 7).

Sze Fei-Izzuddin were one of Malaysia’s best hopes to claim the title but were not at their best and could not stop the Danes from snatching the win in 52 minutes.

Meanwhile, there was another upset in the men’s doubles when Denmark’s world No. 1 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were sent packing in the first round too.

Top seeds Astrup-Rasmussen narrowly lost 16-21, 21-18, 20-22 to Taiwan’s two-time Olympic champion Wang Chi-lin and his new partner Chiu Hsiang-chieh.
