KUALA LUMPUR: Top mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei brought much joy on a gloomy day for the national camp by clearing their first round match in the Malaysian Open.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei showcased their class as the tournament’s third seeds when the smashed their way past Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan-yi and Yang Chu-yun with a sizzling 21-8, 21-9 win in just 27 minutes on Tuesday (Jan 7).
Awaiting them in the second round is another Taiwanese pair, Ming Che-lu-Hung En-tzu, who had earlier caused an upset by eliminating Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei were the first Malaysians to win in the opening day of the home tournament as all other players before them were shown the exit.
Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and women's doubles duo Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien also made it into the second round.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun beat Japan's Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura 21-12, 21-17 and will take on Taiwan's Lee Jhe-huei-Yang Po-hsuan next.
Vivian-Chiew Sien defeated Taiwan's Chen Yu-pei-Sun Yu-hsing 21-11, 21-17 to set up a meeting against China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning.
