PETALING JAYA: Rising young shuttler Low Zi Yu warmed up in style for her first international outing with Dania Sofea Zaidi in the girls’ doubles this year by capturing two titles in the first leg of the Affin-100 Plus Junior Elite Tour.
Zi Yu, who captured silver in the World Junior Championships with Dania last October, proved her versatility when she won both the girls’ singles and doubles crowns in the Under-16 category at the Educity Sports Complex in her home state, Johor on Sunday.
The 15-year-old swept aside S. Hasyni Devi 21-15, 21-9 in just 30 minutes in the girls’ singles final.
In the girls’ doubles, Zi Yu then combined with Auni Fatihin Azuan to beat Sarawak’s Wafa Shahmina Rahman-Wendy Feebie Ricky 21-10, 21-12.
The victories come as a boost for Zi Yu ahead of the Dutch Junior International from Feb 26-March 2 where she will team up with the 17-year-old Dania for the first time in an international competition since the World Junior meet.
The pair did play together in the National Under-21 Championships in Kuantan last month where they finished runners-up to Asian Junior bronze medallists Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting.
Zi Yu-Dania, who also did well to win gold in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) last year, will be out to continue their fine form in the Dutch Junior meet.
