Coach: Matrix should continue winning run with or without Amir

PETALING JAYA: NS Matrix coach Jeff Viernes is hoping for his charges to extend their unbeaten run even in the absence of naturalised player Amir Williams (pic) in the fourth circuit of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) in Vietnam.

Matrix will open their campaign against Macau Black Bears at the Nguyen Du Arena in Ho Chi Minh today.

Matrix lost the service of Amir after he sustained waist and wrist injuries following a fall in the final third circuit match against Vietnam’s Saigon Heat last Wednesday and he would be replaced by Singaporean Jonathan Wong.

Amir, who was named as the player of the game several times, as well as the player of the week in the second circuit in Batam, will be out of action for three to six weeks.

Viernes acknowledged Amir’s strength but believed that Matrix would not crumble in their pursuit for title.

“Amir is out but the team’s morale is not really affected. The strength of our team is not dependent on one player, so we’re still the same team but smaller without him.”

“Our team can play different styles so it’s just about execution and determination if we want to win, with or without Amir,” he said.

Matrix are currently the leader of the overall team standings with nine wins and two losses.

They suffered two narrow losses against Singapore Slingers and Saigon Heat in the first circuit but managed to bounce back stronger to claim nine consecutive wins throughout the three legs.

Viernes said they would have to improve on certain aspects if they want to qualify to the playoffs and win the championship.

Only top four teams will advance to the playoffs.

“I’m satisfied with their overall performance, especially in the last game, where we’re able to bounce back and beat Saigon Heat. We are top in the standings now,” he said.

“We however still have a lot to cover if we want to win the title. My boys are inconsistent in defence so we need to learn how to defend without committing foul.

“They need to be more composed and not bothered by anyone, particularly when the calls are not in our favour. They should also stop complaining and just focus on the game.”
