Youngest bowler Mayra ready to roll with big test

AT 13 years old, Mayra Zahreena Mohd Khairi (pic) is the youngest bowler competing in this year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Representing Penang, she made her debut on Thursday in the girls’ individual event at the Megalanes Sarawak in Kuching, where she finished 13th with a total of 1,147 points.

She may not be in the top league but she sure has lots of potential.

“This is my first Sukma, and I’m thrilled to be here,” Mayra said.

“My journey has just started. I’m committed to doing my best.”

She aims to earn her very first medal in the team events.

“I want to put up a good fight and aim to qualify for the Masters and secure a podium finish in the team events,” she added.

While she is generally satisfied with her performance, Mayra has her disappointments too.

“The biggest challenge for me has been adjusting to the different oil patterns on each lane,” she explained.

Despite these hurdles, Mayra remains resolute.

Adrian Charles Dragon, the Penang team’s bowling coach and a former national bowler, praised Mayra’s determination.

“I’m proud of her fighting spirit despite the challenges she has faced,” he said.

“Both Mayra and Zuhair (Mohd Zuhair Zailani) have demonstrated their grit and have shown that they are capable of standing among the top youth bowlers in the country.”

Yesterday, Mayra took part in the mixed doubles with partner and 16-year-old Zuhair, who is also making his first Sukma appearance this year.
