Riders Azlia and Suhada miss out on chance for medal

PETALING JAYA: National para track cyclist Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais was unfortunate in her run at the Paris Paralympics as she failed to make the fight for a medal.

The 26-year-old Azlia and pilot rider Nurul Suhada Zainal managed to finish eighth in the women’s B 3km individual pursuit qualifying rounds, far off the top four spots to advance.

The riders with the two fastest times will battle it out for the gold medal, while the third and fourth best times will go head-to-head for the bronze.

Azlia and Suhada clocked 3:49.029 in the qualifying rounds, 31 seconds behind qualifying leaders Sophie Unwin and pilot Jenny Holl from Britain.

The British pair smashed the world record with their time of 3:17.643, breaking the previous mark set by compatriot Lora Fachie at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy and pilot Eve McCrystal came in second with a time of 3:20.481.

Azlia and Suhada will compete in the women’s B road race on Friday.
