PETALING JAYA: Syafiq Ahmad (pic) wants to be a regular feature for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and he showed his determination in the recent match against his old club Kedah.
In the game that ended with a 4-1 victory at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Tuesday, Syafiq scored in the 63th and 68th minutes.
Teammate Bergson da Silva also netted a brace via a penalty in the 50th minute, and another strike in the 89th minute.
The Red Eagles’ solitary goal came from Ronald Ngah in the 45th minute.
Syafiq is hoping to get another shot when JDT take on Sabah tomorrow as they bid to end the season unbeaten. The Southern Tigers have already sealed the league title for the ninth time.
The 27-year-old Syafiq, who was on loan to Kedah at the start of the season before returning to JDT halfway through the term, has indeed bloomed towards the end of the season.
“I’m grateful for the chance to play. When the head coach gives us an opportunity, we should make the most of it,” said Syafiq.
“I was given the chance to prove myself to be in the team and I believe I have shown that.
“I’m an attacker, if given another chance against Sabah, the goal is to keep scoring and help the team win,” he said.
“We want to go unbeaten and that is what we are aiming for ... to become the Invincibles again.’’
JDT also ended their 2016 season without dropping any games.
Meanwhile, coach Hector Bidoglio hopes his team would save the best for last.
“Sabah have been playing very well, they have been second in the league for almost the whole season,” said Bidoglio.
“They will surely try to beat us. Of course, being unbeaten is the target but we need to take the pressure off the players.”
Going by their current performance, they are certainly showing no signs of backing down.
