PETALING JAYA: Speedy wingers are no problem for marauding national wingback Quentin Cheng.
The 23-year-old has been the man coming up with pinpoint crosses from the flanks but he will have a heavier workload on the defensive front when Malaysia face Thailand in the AFF Mitsubishi Cup first-leg semi-final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow.
The War Elephants have pacy wingers like Ekanit Panya, Bordin Phala and Jaroensak Wonggorn who can cause much damage for the Harimau Malaya, and Quentin will be on his toes.
Not only that, captain Teerathon Bunmathan and Sasalak Haiprakhon are also speedy wingbacks that Malaysia have to contain.
Quentin said he is ready for the challenge no matter how daunting it seems.
“It can feel like I’ll be on double duty but I’m game for it. In our formation, we have one more extra defender to cover me. So, I’ve got to trust my mates when I get forward,” he said.
“Teerathon is top quality and he will be a big challenge for us to stop.’’
Quentin believes Malaysia can get a good result if the players execute coach Kim Pan-gon’s game plan well.
“The coach, as usual, has a well thought-out strategy and we’re confident of getting a good result.”
Meanwhile, Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim paid a visit to the FAM headquarters and checked out the training session yesterday.
He greeted every player in the team and wished them well for the game against Thailand.
