Giant in the making

I will deliver: Colombian Ayron Del Valle is tipped to be a good replacement for Brazilian Herlison Caion.

PETALING JAYA: Settle down, and then strike.

That will be the goal for new import Ayron Del Valle as the striker eases into his position with Selangor for the new Super League season this year.

Red Giants head coach Tan Cheng Hoe wants Del Valle to take his time to settle in as the former national coach believes the Colombian can be a good replacement for Herlison Caion.

Brazilian Caion has signed up to play for Kuala Lumpur in the league starting on Feb 24 after enjoying a successful season with Selangor where he scored a total of 24 goals.

Cheng Hoe expects the new striker to contribute to the team’s front line in their mission for glory this year.

“We expect Ayron to be able to replace Herlison but of course, we will give him time to adapt to the team and understand the game in Selangor,” he said.

“It’s important for all players to support Ayron so that he can give his best performance as they play as a team.”

Selangor lost to Penang 1-2 in the Piala Harapan challenge last weekend after edging Kedah 6-5 on penalties.

Cheng Hoe, commenting on the performance, was dissatisfied with the players’ finishing and hoped they would follow his plan well.

“I see a lot of positives from the game. Overall, players from all sectors – goalkeeping, defence, midfield and attack, created good chances but they need to work on their finishing,” he added.

The 34-year-old Del Valle said he would help Selangor capture at least one trophy this season.

“There were several offers from clubs in Colombia but I chose Selangor. I discussed it with my family and decided to come here to experience the new journey in my career,” he said.

“Selangor have a good tradition in the league and I hope to help them,” added Del Valle, who has played in the Categoria Primera A in Colombia before.
