Heavy is the burden of a Red Giant but Khuzaimi’s ready to shoulder it

PETALING JAYA: Bigger club, bigger responsibility but Selangor centreback Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee is game for it.

The 29-year-old, who joined the Red Giants from Negri Sembilan in January, is looking forward to making his first start for the club when they take on Kelantan United in the Super League at the Petaling Jaya Stadium today.Looking smart: Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee showing Selangor’s new away jersey. — Selangor FCLooking smart: Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee showing Selangor’s new away jersey. — Selangor FC

The national player, who rose to prominence last season thanks to his swashbuckling performances for Harimau Malaya and Negri Sembilan, is expected to be a lynchpin, especially in the centre of defence.

“Playing for Selangor a big responsibility and I have to be at my best,” said Khuzaimi.

“The team’s preparation has been good and they’re ready to go through the season well. A winning start will boost our fortunes.

“I’ve recovered from my hamstring injury after the AFF Mitsubishi Cup. I’ve played many games during pre-season and my combination with all the defenders has been good.

“We will not underestimate Kelantan United although they played in the second division last year. Our goal is to get a win at home.”

Khuzaimi hopes to remain as a regular in the national team under Kim Pan-gon with a strong showing in the league although many are also out to impress in that position, including his own teammates Sharul Nazeem Zulphakar and Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar.

“The competition will be stiff as there are many quality players in every team but this rivalry is good for us national players,” he said.

“Coach Kim gave me the opportunity, and I want to repay that faith with a consistent showing in the league.”
