PETALING JAYA: Brazilian striker Willian Lira came to Kedah carrying great expectations, having played in the J-League and Brazilian Serie A.
However, he didn’t quite live up to his reputation with just two goals in five games before the international break.
He even looked languid and sluggish at times as the fans were not fond of him.
Coach Nafuzi Zain, however, persevered with his choice and the 29-year-old is now repaying the faith.
Lira scored the winning goal in their 1-0 win against Penang and now hopes to get more goals.
“I feel good. One chance, one goal. Sometimes, strikers have these phases. They work hard for goals but the chance can be tough. I am glad to have got a goal and now I have confidence,” said the former Ventforet Kofu striker.
“Sometimes, we rely on technique, and sometimes, I open up spaces for other players to score.
“My role is based on the system used by the coach. When I get the chance, I want to score.
“Now I am getting used to the system, and chemistry is getting better too.
“I think I will score more now. I will add on to the three goals I got in the six matches so far.”
Nafuzi is delighted for Lira, saying that it would boost his confidence.
“A goal for three points and also for his confidence. I hope this is the start needed for Lira,” he said.
The challenge ahead is harder. Kedah next face table toppers Johor Darul Ta’zim at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri tomorrow.
“JDT, we all know. We have to be prepared, it will be an exciting game, but we have to give our best, that’s important.”
