PETALING JAYA: Sabah’s left wingback Daniel Ting is proving to be something special for the marauding Rhinos.
The 30-year-old Daniel, who was born in Cheshire, England, caught the eye with his bold forays and bagged a brace in Sabah’s 6-1 Super League win over Kelantan at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Wednesday.
Daniel has now scored four goals and provided one assist in seven games as Sabah lie fourth in the standings with 17 points.
The Malaysian international’s impressive display bodes well for the national team, who are seeking a solid back-up for first-choice leftback La’vere Corbin Ong of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).
Sabah coach Ong Kim Swee, for one, is pleased as punch with Daniel’s form as he continues to give his industrious defender the licence to join the attack.
“Our tactics allow Dan to move forward and do damage to the opponents. He is defensively strong and he also has the height and physical presence, hence his effectiveness in the box. It’s great to see him scoring,” said Kim Swee.
Against Kelantan, David got into the scoring act early by finding the net in the fourth and 11th minutes to put Sabah 2-0 ahead.
Dominic Tan (48th minute), Baddrol Bakhtiar (61st), Stuart Wilkin (75th) and Telmo Castanheira (92nd) completed the rout.
Kim Swee is glad that his charges have kept their 100% record at home with four straight wins.
“They took their chances well, and that’s important. But there’s still much for us to work on if you look at our away record so far. Two losses and a draw – that’s not something that makes me happy.’’
