NATIONAL SEA Games Under-22 squad goalkeeper Sikh Izhan Nazrel Sikh Azman has reminded teammates to be aware of Thailand’s set-pieces when they face the arch rivals in their second Group B match at the Prince Stadium today.
Sikh Izhan said through the video analysis and monitoring of Thailand’s lethal approach in attack, Malaysia’s defence have their work cut out – especially when it comes to the War Elephants’ set- pieces, which have proven to be their dangerous weapon.
“We must also be aware of their splitting passes, especially from midfield and focus more on the defensive side. Though there are some new faces, some have played for their senior team and in the top league,” said Sikh Izhan.
“Therefore, they have the experience which will translate into an advantage,” he said.
Apart from the opponents, Sikh Izhan hopes there will be better coordination and communication with his defence so that there will not be another mistake like the one during Malaysia’s 5-1 victory over Laos in the first match.
After taking the lead through Mohd Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili, Malaysia conceded an own goal when a defender attempted to clear a cross by Phetdavanh Somsanid in the 21st minute for Laos’ equaliser.
Meanwhile, striker Aliff Izwan Yuslan, who has been working on his goal scoring technique before facing the 2021 SEA Games runners-up, has also been focusing on set-pieces to score as many goals as possible.
Aliff, however, admitted that he was under a little pressure since Thailand are 16-time winners in the SEA Games.
Whatever the outcome of the match against Thailand, Malaysia’s hopes will rest on the remaining match against defending champions Vietnam.
Malaysia will be looking to recapture the glory of the squad that won the gold 12 years ago.
Malaysia and Thailand have three points after one match while Singapore and Laos have yet to win any points.
