Right or left, it’s all right for Canaries’ winger Al-Hafiz

PETALING JAYA: He has gone from the right wing to the left, but Kedah flanker Al-Hafiz Harun is fast adjusting to his new position and believes the current break will give him time to adjust to the role.

The 29-year-old had been known for his inside wing runs, which allowed him to take shots with his preferred left foot.

But the arrival of Argentine winger Manuel Hidalgo has seen Al-Hafiz sent to the left flank, as coach Nafuzi Zain wants him to be more direct by making left-footed crosses and passes.

The former Penang star admitted that it took him a while to adjust to it, which is why he only managed a few goals.

Al-Hafiz, who has started six games and made three substitute appearances, feels he is a player who is in tune with the coach’s tactics.

“Coach Nafuzi saw me as a fit on the left because I like playing one-twos, dribbling past players and making quick crosses,” he said.

“At first, it was different because I was cutting inside and taking shots, but the coach wants me to be the provider.

“During the break, I am adapting to the left side and I hope to get more starts. I have only one goal but have made several assists.

“As for the competition from my teammates, it is healthy,” he said.

Kedah are in Langkawi for a bonding exercise and training sessions to prepare for the resumption of the Super League on May 18.

The Canaries will take on Kelantan at Alor Setar’s Darulaman Stadium on May 19.

“This is a team with lots of new players, just a few months into the season. That is why our performances have been up and down a little. But with this team bonding exercise, we will only get better,” said Al-Hafiz.

“Plus, we also got to meet Kedah fans on the island,” he said.

Kedah are currently fifth with 19 points from 10 matches.
