PETALING JAYA: Young national winger Arif Aiman Hanapi has been a standout this season, not just for the club but also for the country.
The 21-year-old showed his worth during the friendly match against the Solomon Islands when he scored one goal to help Harimau Malaya win 4-1 at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak, Terengganu, on Wednesday.
The Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) player’s display on the right flank was captivating, and he showed why he was worthy of a starting spot with his impressive dribbling, movement, awareness and vision.
Arif has scored five goals and provided nine assists in 14 matches for JDT in the Super League, and is proving to be the best local attacking player.
He is hoping to hit top form for the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar next year but first, Arif wants to give another good show when Malaysia take on Papua New Guinea (PNG) in their next friendly at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak, Terengganu on Tuesday.
“It doesn’t matter who scores, it’s important that our game continues to improve, and we overcome our weaknesses,” said Arif.
“All of us want to be in our best shape during the Asian Cup, so every one is working hard. Every friendly match is crucial to building strength and chemistry.
“I’m proud to score my first goal for Malaysia after 16 games. Good preparation will be the key to a win over the Papua New Guinea game next.”
Meanwhile, the team have been dealt a blow after JDT duo, midfielder Natxo Insa and centreback Feroz Baharuddin, had to pull out from the squad due to hamstring injuries.
Coach Kim Pan-gon said: “I’m saddened and a little disappointed as we were unable to fully utilise both these players in this FIFA window.
“I hope they will recover soon and be back in action with JDT, and remain fit for the next Harimau Malaya’s training camp.”
