Veteran hitman hopes to finally win a trophy after signing for Kedah

PETALING JAYA: Veteran striker Ifedayo Olusegun remains a top gun at 32.

Few can dispute that, given how sought-after the Nigerian still is going by the many offers he has received since he became a free agent after leaving Melaka last year.

But as spoilt for choice as he was, it didn’t take long for the two-time Golden Boot winner to say yes when Kedah signalled their interest to sign him.

Now, Olusegun wants to achieve something with the Canaries which he has not done before – win a trophy.

“I’ve a vision to win trophies with Kedah. I’ve yet to win a trophy in Malaysia, and I strongly hope I can do it with Kedah,’’ he said.

“I want to enjoy my football here and I will bring all I have to the team. We will have a colourful season ahead of us as we will chase everything.’’

Olusegun said the stability of the team management and their passionate fans made him take the flight to Alor Setar and ply his trade with Kedah.

Kedah are now fourth in the Super League with 28 points.

Olusegun said that when the deal was announced by the club, his Instagram page was ‘’on fire’’ as the fans got all excited and could not wait to see him don the state’s famed green jersey.

“The Kedah fans are one of the best in Malaysia, so I’m really excited to play for them. I can’t wait to start,” said the lethal finisher, who has also featured for Selangor and Felda United.

“Alor Setar is also one of the best cities to stay in. My friends who have been here, always tell me good things about the city.

“As for the Kedah team, their stability is due to how well they are managed. I’ve seen their current players and I also know the coach and manager.

“It will be a good working environment. Kedah are heading in the right direction and I see a great chance for them to finish the season well, at least in the top two of the league. They can also contend for the Malaysia Cup and try to qualify for the Asian club competition.”

Although there were concerns over his fitness as he had not played competitively for months, Olusegun said he had put in the fitness work to be prepared for his stint in Kedah.

“I intend to hit the ground running as I’m highly motivated to give my all to the fans.’’
