PETALING JAYA: Super Mario Arques may come to the rescue for Police in the Super League.

It is learnt that the management have opened talks with the 31-year-old, who is a free agent after completing his six-month deal with Kelantan, to beef up the midfield.

On Sunday, Police lost 0-2 to Kedah at the Petaling Jaya Stadium and caretaker coach Eddy Gapil lamented on their porous midfield, which saw Nigerian striker Ifedayo Olusegun scoring in the 81st minute and Lee Tuck adding another in the 90th.

The former Kelantan captain Arques is seen as the right candidate to bolster their foreign options.

Eddy said it was up to the management to decide.

“If Mario joins, it will be a welcome addition. He’s one player that I would love to work with but I can’t confirm anything as we are waiting for updates,” he said.

“Any addition to the team is a boost because we need depth and strength, especially in the foreign department.”

Arques is a polished midfielder with the ability to dictate tempo and make visionary passes. He also captained Kelantan this season.

The former Villarreal youth player has played for top Indian clubs like Kerala Blasters and Jamshedpur and Newcastle Jets in Australia.

Meanwhile, Eddy added that the club would announce a new coach soon.

“We look forward to the arrival of a new coach. This is a family that work hard and want the best outcome in the Super League,” he said.

“Police have shown they have what it takes to battle the top teams this season.”
