Don’t take Timor Leste lightly

PETALING JAYA: Never ever underestimate the might of the minnows.

That was the message shared by centreback Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili as Harimau Muda take on Timor Leste in their final Group B match of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Championship match at the PTT Stadium in Rayong, Thailand, tomorrow.

On paper, it should be an easy game against Timor Leste, even more after beating favourites Indonesia 2-1 in the first game. But Ubaidullah, who plays for Terengganu in the Super League, believes that all the teams in the tournament are equally strong.

“In our group, Indonesia are the SEA Games champions and Timor Leste can be tricky opponents. Any team that enter a game are looking for a win, whether they are favourites or minnows,” said the 19-year-old.

“If we want to win this competition, we have to take every game seriously.

“Any lapses will be punished, so that is something we have to be mindful of.”

With a win, Malaysia will confirm their spot in the semi-finals and also top the group with six points. In the next round, they could possibly face sides like Laos, Vietnam or the Philippines.

Ubaidullah is a key player in E. Elavarasan’s side as he is the primary centreback tasked to stop attacks with his interceptions and tackles, but with the ball, he is known for his classy passes and ability to dictate tempo with his movements.

With such influence, many expect him to play a key role but Ubaidullah said every man in the squad has what it takes to steer them forward.

“The other players in the squad are motivating me to give my all during matches and training. I aim to take my chances well.

“I believe we have a realistic chance of winning. We have been positive despite our short preparation time for this tournament. The vibe is good in the camp.”
