PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Cup dream is no more but Selangor coach Tan Cheng Hoe plans to salvage the season by at least finishing second in the Super League.
And he certainly does not want Terengganu to be the stumbling block again. The east coast side had sent the 33-time Malaysia Cup champions packing in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate win on Sunday but Selangor can exact revenge when they meet again at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak today.
With Johor Darul Ta’zim already crowned Super League champions, Selangor have to keep winning to consolidate their second position.
Selangor have 49 points from 22 matches but Kedah, with 44 points but a game in hand, could overhaul the Red Giants if they falter.
“We did not achieve our target of progressing in the Malaysia Cup but we still want to finish second in the Super League. We need to focus on the match against Terengganu again,” said Cheng Hoe.
“Our defeat on Sunday was a lesson that we cannot take any team for granted although Terengganu are currently sixth in the league.
“The players are under a lot of pressure but we know our strengths and our weaknesses.”
The Sunday clash was also marred by the unruly behaviour of defender Yazan Al-Arab who kicked referee Mohd Hasrol Mohd Amir after the final whistle and was shown the red card.
Al-Arab has regretted his actions and apologised but his dismissal means the Jordan international will miss the crucial clash against Terengganu
Cheng Hoe does not want to focus on the incident or about the refereeing during the match. His main goal is to get a result against Terengganu.
Meanwhile, Terengganu coach Tomislav Steinbruckner will also be taking a cautious approach and will be making several changes in his starting line-up as his players have been working tirelessly in their last three matches.
