PETALING JAYA: Footballer Yazan Al-Arab has paid a heavy price for kicking a match referee in frustration on Sept 24 as Selangor have terminated the defender’s contract immediately.
The incident occurred after the final whistle of the match between the Red Giants and Terengganu in the second leg of the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals at the Petaling Jaya Stadium which ended in a 1-1 draw two weeks ago.
Selangor were eliminated with a 3-1 aggregate by Terengganu and the Jordan international had vented his frustration on referee Mohd Hasrol Mohd Amir after the final whistle and it led him to receiving a red card.
“Following the incident involving the referee and Yazan Al-Arab during the second leg of the Malaysia Cup quarter-final on Sept 24, Selangor have initiated a disciplinary inquiry on the matter,” stated Selangor.
“Based on the disciplinary inquiry, the club have decided to end Al-Arab’s contract with immediate effect on mutual consent.
“We would like to wish our gratitude for Al-Arab’s services to the Red Giants during the two seasons he had played for the club.
“The club also wish him the best for his future undertakings.”
He was not fielded in a Super League match against Terengganu at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak where Selangor secured a 4-0 win on Sept 29.
Al-Arab had regretted his actions and also openly apologised in his social media accounts after the incident.
Selangor had also condemned the player’s action and the decision to expel Al-Arab is also a stern reminder to their players to keep their emotions in check and avoid such unruly behaviour in future.
