KUALA LUMPUR: He would have liked three points, but an equalising goal was still some consolation for Pahang captain and playmaker Sergio Aguero.
His goal earned the Elephants a 2-2 draw against Terengganu in the Super League at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Sunday.
Terengganu had taken a 2-0 lead with Filipino-Iranian midfielder Omid Nazari shining with two fine goals in the 25th and 72nd minute, the first one being a knuckleball freekick from 20m out.
But the home side fought back with Brazilian striker Rafael Silva scoring in the 78th minute.
Aguero then turned hero with the equaliser in the 80th minute.
The 29-year-old Argentinian, who is naturalised to play for Malaysia, was happy to have helped the team make a comeback.
“It’s always nice to score and my aim was to just help the team get a result,” he said.
This comeback was great because Terengganu had a good lead. And we got two goals in the last 15 minutes.”
Pahang are fourth in the league with 44 points from 22 games. They are six points behind third-placed Kedah, who have 50 from 23 games.
Aguero is still hopeful that the team can finish top three and they will fight in the last four matches to ensure maximum points.
“We can play better, we can do much better like in the beginning of the season. We target to be in the top three and we hope we can still achieve it.”
At the start of the season, he missed several matches due to injuries but since returning, the former Melaka and Perak player has been a revelation. Aguero has scored five goals and produced five assists in 13 matches.
“I feel I helped the team and played well. Of course, I always try to do better and improve. So let’s hope the next four matches for us will be good.”
With such form, it’s not surprising to learn that other teams, especially those in Indonesia, are now eyeing Aguero. For him, though, the task ahead with Pahang comes first.
