Corbin-Ong urges teammates to stop the leak at the back

Walk tall: La’vere Corbin-Ong (right) wants Malaysia to justify their world ranking by beating Taiwan in the World Cup qualifying match tomorrow.

PETALING JAYA: Defender La’vere Corbin-Ong believes anything but a win in the World Cup qualifying match against Taiwan is unacceptable.

Malaysia opened the second round of the World Cup qualifying with a 4-3 win over world No. 97 Kyrgyzstan at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Nov 16 and are determined to follow through the fine run with another good result.

The fine opening display had given Malaysia a fighting chance of advancing to the third round from Group D which also consists of Oman.

Corbin’s confidence stems from the fact that Harimau Malaya’s fine display against Kyrgyzstan and believes the world No. 152 Taiwan can be conquered in Taipei Municipal Stadium tomorrow.

The Johor Darul Ta’zim left wingback hopes they will justify their world No. 137 standing with another powerful display in the away tie.

“I think this team know their quality and we know anything less than three points is a letdown,” said the 32-year-old Corbin.

“Not to say that Taiwan are a strong team but we are going with the right defensive and attack attitude to bring the three points back to Malaysia.

“Based on our strength, it is achievable and we need to follow up on our good performance in the last match.

“I’m looking forward to the match, get some good video analysis and be ready for the match.”Taiwan lost their opening match 3-0 to Oman in an away match in Muscat on Nov 16 and will be aiming to bounce back against Malaysia to keep their hopes alive in the group.

A win should give Malaysia an early cushion before playing Oman away on March 21 and the home clash against the Arab nation on March 26.

Meanwhile, the 72nd-ranked Oman will be aiming to consolidate their position when they play Kyrgyzstan in an away match at Bishkek on Tuesday.
