PETALING JAYA: It was a painful outing in the Malaysia Cup final for Terengganu’s Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili but he is optimistic of a bright future.
The 20-year-old centreback had to be taken off in the 75th minute when he landed awkwardly after trying to challenge winger Arif Aiman Hanapi before his team ended losing 1-3 to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) on Friday.
Footages of the incident looked gruesome as Ubaidullah’s right knee seemed as though it had hyperextended and during the medal presentation ceremony, his right knee was heavily iced and bandaged.
Yesterday, he went for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan and the result is expected to be out today.
Some felt that the poor field conditions at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil caused his injury but Ubaidullah said that injuries were part and parcel of the game.
“I would not blame the pitch. I guess it was my luck that it had to happen on that day. I’m just praying that it is not serious at all,” said Ubaidullah.
“I was worried initially. I played on for a while after the tackle but felt it was best that I rested as not to aggravate it during the match.
“I don’t want to be out for too long because I am young, growing and learning as a player.
‘‘I want to be even better in the future.”
Overall, Ubaidullah said his season had been a decent one and hoped to soar to greater heights.
“My end goal is to get a national call-up. I hope to impress with the Under-23 team, and hopefully, I will be noticed by the senior team.
“I’ve made it to the first team with Terengganu, and to maintain that, I need to work harder and be humble.
“This season has been good but I want to make it better in the subsequent years.”
He currently has a year left in his contract but it’s learnt that Terengganu are keen to extend his stay as they have been happy with his development as a player.
Ubaidullah has won two trophies this year, the MFL Cup with the reserve team Terengganu II and the Merlion Cup with the Malaysian Under-23 team.
