PETALING JAYA: Pahang’s Australian centreback Michael Glassock can look back on his first season in the Super League as a memorable and educational one.
The 24-year-old had joined the Elephants from National Premier League (NPL) side Sydney Olympic.
Glassock’s signing was initially seen as a departure from the norm, as Super League sides usually target players from the A-League, which is a rung above the NPL.
Glassock, however, has proven to be a good buy by showing he could contain some of the top strikers in the Super League.
His defensive awareness and crucial interceptions have helped Pahang keep seven clean sheets in 25 games in all competitions this season.
“Overall, I believe I’ve made a good contribution. Helping the team keep seven clean sheets is very encouraging,’’ said Glassock, who made his pro debut in 2017 with Central Coast Mariners.
“The Super League has a lot of quality teams with very talented local and foreign players. Every game presents new challenges and obstacles. Coming up against the best strikers was a good test for me and I intend to do even better next season.’’
Although he was pleased to help Pahang meet their target of finishing in the top five, Glassock felt that they could have made the top three.
‘’We let some opportunities slip by at the tailend of the season that cost us a top three spot. Given our strong start to the season, where we were unbeaten in our first 11 games, we should’ve done even better,’’ he said.
‘’But it has been a pleasure playing with all my teammates. I’m learning a lot from them and we have a good understanding. With a bit more consistency, we can go further next season.’’
