PETALING JAYA: Matthew Davies and La’vere Corbin-Ong are the undisputed first-choice fullbacks for Malaysia and will be expected to play a key role in the Asian Cup.
However, right wingback Syahmi Safari believes that everyone in the squad deserves a chance to be in the first eleven and will fight for contention when they kick off the first Group E game against Jordan at the Al-Janoub Stadium on Jan 15.
“All the players here deserve to play in the first eleven. We have the best team because all the players give their all to fight for positions. There is healthy competition within the team,” said the 25-year-old Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) player.
“The coach has told us that we have to raise our intensity because we are facing sides like Syria (in a friendly tomorrow), and then the first group game against Jordan.
“The training has been of quality and one that demanded us to get into a game feel. We need it to increase our momentum.”
Syahmi is one of the versatile additions to the squad as he can play as a fullback, wingback and winger. And he is capable of playing in both flanks as he is comfortable using both his feet.
He brings pace, energy and directness on the flanks when it comes to attack, and during defensive transitions, he is known for his closing downs and tackles.
“I have played in the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup before in 2018 but this is my first ever big stage tournament. The Asian Cup is like the pinnacle for any professional in this region.
“For Malaysians, it’s huge, so I hope to give my all and prove something.
“The first two games against Jordan and Bahrain are crucial. We want to get points for the next stage. The reality is they are ranked higher and much more experienced, but we have belief (that we can do it.”
