PETALING JAYA: Midfielder Noor Al-Rawabdeh’s allegiance is for his country first and then the club.
With that, expect nothing but for the Selangor player to press on the gas when his nation Jordan clash with Malaysia in the opening Group E game of the Asian Cup at the Al-Janoub Stadium in Doha on Monday.
Al-Rawabdeh is familiar with his opponents, as he plays week in and week out in the Super League for the Red Giants.
The 26-year-old is expected to be one of the key players for Hussein Ammouta’s side in the tournament, tasked to make his visionary passes and industrious play to his side’s benefit.
Al-Rawabdeh said he was ready to face his club teammates like midfielder Brendan Gan, winger Faisal Halim and centreback Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee but his commitment to the club will be put aside for time being.
“Of course, Malaysia are now much stronger and they have amazing players. You can see their growth over the months,” said Al-Rawabdeh.
“I know Faisal from my time in Selangor and you can see his performances in the league. To me, he is the dangerman. One we should keep a close eye on.
“It is going to be a special match for me because I will be facing my clubmates. We’ve been checking up on each other since coming to Doha but occasionally we also poke fun on the upcoming match.”
Al-Rawabdeh said they have prepared well for the tournament after playing two friendlies against Qatar (2-1) and Japan (1-6).
“The preparation is at maximum level and everyone is excited,” he said.
“It is the most important tournament for every team in Asia. So I can’t wait to play.”
