PETALING JAYA: For Sergio Aguero, penning an extension with Pahang was an easy decision, one that he had no qualms about.
The naturalised Argentinian playmaker has signed a two-year deal with the Elephants and is expected to captain the side for the 2024-2025 season.
The 29-year-old expressed his delight when Pahang came forward and told him to stay on.
“It wasn’t a difficult decision because I now call Pahang my home. I value what the club have done these past three years and they were the ones who helped me get through the naturalisation process. They always saw me as a priority,” said Aguero after signing a deal with Indonesian apparel and footwear company OrtusEight.
Besides Aguero, the club have also confirmed that several key players will stay on for the next two years.
They are leftbacks Syazwan Andik and Azwan Aripin, goalkeeper Zarif Irfan Hashimuddin, rightback Azrif Nasrulhaq, midfielders Saiful Jamaluddin and Nasrullah Zaki, and winger Syaahir Saiful Nizam.
The club are embarking on a two-year project to do well in the league and hopefully win any of the domestic cup competitions on offer.
“The key players were kept because we did well last season,” said Aguero.
“We want to fight for the league and cups. That’s the project. We hope the current set of players and new players can achieve that.
“I’m happy with my performance last year but just not happy with the injuries I suffered. I hope I can help the team do better than last year.
“The target for 2024-2025 is to help the team finish in the best place possible in the league. I hope we can produce something for the fans and management.”
Aguero scored five goals and provided five assists in 19 domestic matches last year.
