PETALING JAYA: Towering defender Safwan Mazlan wants to stand tall in his first national stint.
The 21-year-old is one of the 33 players selected by head coach Kim Pan-gon for the Harimau Malaya centralised training camp starting today to prepare for their third and fourth Group D matches of the World Cup 2026-Asian Cup 2027 round two qualifiers against Oman.
They will play the club in Muscat on March 21 and Bukit Jalil on March 26.
The Terengganu player was thrilled with the call-up but knows he has to prove himself.
“I’ve never imagined that I would get a call-up this quick. First time being called up, who would not be happy? Now, the expectations from my friends and family are higher,” said Safwan, who also played for Malaysia Under-23 team.
“I know it is not going to be easy because the seniors are pretty solid. I’ll compete for the spot but I also want to learn from these top-level players.
“I hope be part of the squad when we face Oman. If that happens, my dream will come true.
Standing tall at 1.84m, Safwan, who can play in every position at the back, said he enjoyed the role as a defender.
“Versatility is my asset but the position that I love the most is centreback. It’s easier to play in this role, and in fact, I played this position the most last season,” said the Terengganu player.
“It fits my style. Plus, my physique helps with defending too.”
Besides the national duty, Safwan also want to show improvement when he plays for Terengganu in the local league this season and aims to give a good showing in the Under-23 Asian Cup next month.
