Selangor hope they won’t be punished harshly for Charity Shield pullout

PETALING JAYA: Selangor are hopeful that they will not be burdened with heavy sanctions by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) for pulling out of the Charity Shield game.

The Red Giants were supposed to play against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) yesterday but they didn’t due to safety reasons following the acid attack on Faisal Halim on Sunday. Defending champions JDT were handed their first three points.

The decision did not sit well with JDT and the MFL as they wanted the game to go on.

Selangor Football Club (SFC) technical committee chairman Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar is hopeful that the repercussions will not be heavy on the club.

“MFL will discuss further with the board of directors, so we are waiting to see what’s going to be done next,” said Shahril.

“I told them, as one football community, we are friends. Please try not to burden the club.

“As it is, the club have gone through a lot with all the security uncertainties and the threats that happened to our team members. It is time we move forward and see what can be done to improve the situation.”

The club said besides the attack on Faisal, there were other criminal incidents and threats involving several players and team officials within 72 hours.

Meanwhile, Shahril said he was hopeful for Faisal to return home for Hari Raya Aidiladha on June 17.

“Mickey will always be Mickey. He wants to return home but is aware of the procedures that he needs to go through,” said Shahril.

“I am glad that he is in a cheerful mood, and is able to walk to the bathroom. He is a fighter and is doing his utmost best to ensure he recovers quickly.”

Selangor’s medical chief Dr Mohd Hazwan Khair said Faisal could have one or two more reconstructive procedures after his skin allograft surgery went well on Thursday evening.
