Kedah made to slog for win over Police in the rain

IPOH: Kedah weathered brutal conditions to start their Super League season with a slim 1-0 win against Police at the Selayang Stadium yesterday.

The Canaries started the game strong as it only took 33 seconds for them to find the back of the net through returnee Syafiq Ahmad, who thumped in Sony Norde’s cross from the left on a rain-soaked day.

The 28-year-old is back with Kedah on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), and is on his third stint with the northern club as he started his professional career there back in 2013.

Kedah kept knocking at Police’s door with several dangerous attacks that came close to extending their lead.

In the 12th minute, Norde almost made it two for the visitors, but his powerful shot rocked the goalpost.

Police had the chance to equalise in the 32nd minute through Bruno Suzuki who dribbled the ball past Kedah’s defence but his shot strayed wide of the goal.

In the second half Syafiq once again had the chance to score his second goal in the 63rd minute but his header from Norde’s freekick was off target.

The match slowed down in pace as the rain became a hindrance for both team’s attacking attempts.

Despite the win, Kedah remained with no points in the league as they carry a three-point deduction due to the salary arrears for 2023.

For the next match, Kedah will be making the trip south once again as they take on Selangor on May 18, while Police will head to Ipoh to face Perak on the same day.
