PETALING JAYA: Malaysia football coach Kim Pan-gon has thrown a challenge at young attacker Haqimi Azim Rosli for the final two World Cup 2026-Asian Cup 2027 second-round qualifier matches.
The 21-year-old said the South Korean has told him to focus on getting goals when they face Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek tomorrow and Taiwan in Bukit Jalil on June 11.
It is likely that the Kuala Lumpur player, who plays on the right flank and as a target man, could be the back-up option upfront with Paulo Josue expected to start as striker.
“During centralised camp, he played me as a No. 7 (right winger) and No. 9 (striker). Wherever he plays me, I will surely give my best,” said the lanky player, who stands at 1.85m tall.
“Yes, during sessions, the coach did tell me that he wants goals from me, so I have to work harder during the qualifiers and show that I can be his goal-getter.
“If given the chance, I will do my best. Now we have Paulo and me, and there are others able to play as No. 9.
“But if I am playing, I will show Malaysians I am capable of being their striker.”
Haqimi, though, admitted it is not easy breaking into the first eleven and coping with the demanding tactics of Pan-gon, which demands intensity and pace.
But he knows why it is done in such a way as the national team hope to etch history by qualifying for the third round qualifiers for the first time.
“It is tough for me to break into the first eleven. I have to fight for my place.
“It is challenging under his tactics, so I have to adapt fast and fight for a spot.
“It’s a huge responsibility because I have not played for the senior team in a while. It’s an experience for me. I will learn more. That’s for sure.
“If this team help Malaysia qualify for the third round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers and Asian Cup 2027, I would be proud and happy.
“What’s important is that our people pray for us and wish us success during the qualifiers.”
