It gets harder for Harimau Malaya after draw against Kyrgyzstan

Harimau Malaya will face Taiwan on June 11

PETALING JAYA: It was a valiant effort but is it enough for Malaysia to make it into the third round of World Cup qualification?

Malaysia drew 1-1 against Kyrgyzstan in the 2026 World Cup-2027 Asian Cup Group D qualifying in Bishkek on Thursday night (June 6) to keep a slim chance alive.

The home side took the lead through winger Gulzhigit Alykulov in the 24th minute but 14 minutes later, Malaysia snatched an equaliser in the 38th minute through an own goal from Odiljon Abdurahmanov.

With the draw, Malaysia stay in the third position with seven points, while Kyrgyzstan remain second with 10 points. Oman are top with 12 points, while Taiwan remain pointless in Group D.

Malaysia will take on Taiwan on June 11 at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Harimau Malaya will be hoping for Kyrgyzstan to lose against Oman, but at the same time, Malaysia must thrash Taiwan at least by five goals as Kyrgyzstan have a better goal difference than Malaysia.

The top two sides in the group will qualify for the next round and will also automatically get to the Asian Cup 2027.
