Shahril quits all FAM posts, insists not tied to punishment
KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) vs Selangor saga took a new twist when Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar made a surprising decision to resign from all his posts in the national football body with immediate effect.
Shahril is the Football Association (FAS) deputy president and was previously the manager of the national Under-23 team and is also an FAM exco member.
He informed the governing body led by president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin of his decision yesterday.
However, he denied that his resignation was related to Selangor being fined RM100,000 and having three points docked by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) in the 2024-2025 Super League competition for not showing up for the season-opening Charity Shield match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, on May 10.
“I informed FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin this morning that I am resigning from all positions in FAM with immediate effect. The reason for my resignation will remain among me, FAM and Hamidin.
“It has nothing to do with any issue. I have been contemplating this for a long time, not just for a week or two. It’s better to focus on the club (Selangor) and FAS,” he said.
A day earlier, the Red Giants were also informed that they must compensate Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), the home team for the season-opening match, and the MFL, with the amount to be announced later while their Week 14 Super League match against JDT at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium will be played without spectators. — Bernama
