Garrido’s high-scoring boys face Thai test to top group

PETALING JAYA: Defending champions Malaysia will take on Thailand at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, Indonesia, today to determine the champions of Group C in the Asean Under-19 Championship.

Malaysia currently lead Group C with a better goal difference, sharing six points with Thailand.

A draw should be enough for Juan Torres Garrido’s squad to emerge as group champions and secure a place in the semi-finals.

Malaysia displayed strong performances in the two previous matches against Brunei and Singapore but coach Garrido emphasised the importance of staying fully focused against the Thais.

“Certainly, there are some aspects from the previous matches that we need to improve on,” said Garrido.

The young national team recorded impressive results by thrashing Brunei 11-0 and Singapore 5-0. The group champions and the best runner-up from the three groups will qualify for the semi-finals, which will take place this Saturday.

Thailand coach Emerson Pereira is bracing for a tough reception from Malaysia.

“For me, Malaysia are a good team. They have strong wingers on both sides but I believe my players can compete with them,” he said.
