(Reuters) - Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop will undergo heart surgery after a potential risk was diagnosed during his routine pre-season medical check, the English Championship club said on Tuesday.

After discussions with cardiologists, the club's medical team and Bishop, it was decided that immediate surgery would be the best course of action for the 27-year-old, the club said.

“It’s been a really uncertain time for myself, my wife and new baby," Bishop said in a statement.

“Despite the difficult circumstance, I am extremely grateful to have been referred to a world-leading expert in a ground-breaking procedure to get me back to full fitness."

The club said updates on Bishop's return would follow after the surgery had been carried out.
