PETALING JAYA: Striker Syafiq Ahmad is ready to make his presence felt when the national team get into action in the Merdeka Tournament starting on Saturday at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Malaysia will open their campaign against the Philippines while defending champions Tajikistan take on Lebanon on the same day and the winners will contest the final on Sept 8.
The Kedah striker, who had skipped the previous call-up due to a hamstring injury, is back with a lot of spirit and swagger as he wants to show that he has what it takes to be Harimau Malaya’s lethal weapon.
“It feels good to be back with the national team, and now under a new coach, we are excited to see what is in store for us. Just a few days of training, but the commitment looks great,” said Syafiq.
The 29-year-old is considered one of the best attackers in the local league, having played in seven Super League games and scoring two goals.
The player, who is with the Canaries on-loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim is known for his brilliant plays as a target man. He is also capable of holding the ball well and challenges defenders with his immense fitness.
“This season, I joined Kedah to get minutes and I’m getting lots of great momentum from the Super League. I hope to bring the same vibe into the Merdeka Tournament.
“I want to score as many goals as possible but I want them to lead to victories. Even if it is just assisting goals, I am happy.
“But I’m aware that I’m not a guaranteed striker because there are other forwards in the team like Darren (Lok) and Qimi (Haqimi Azim Rosli). So I will fight for that attacking spot.”
Like Malaysia, the Philippines also have a new coach – Norman Fegidero, who is on an interim basis after Tom Saintfeit left the team.
Malaysia are led by Pau Marti Vicente, who replaced Kim Pan-gon.
