PETALING JAYA: Defensive midfielder Syamer Kutty Abba’s screamer of a goal for Malaysia against the Philippines was just reward for his high work rate in the hosts’ come-from-behind 2-1 win in the Merdeka Tournament.
The Penang player’s superb equaliser from 20m in the 43rd minute proved the turning point for the Harimau Malaya, as they went on to seal the match via a penalty by Safawi Rasid in the 73rd.
The Philippines had taken a shock lead after 27 minutes through an own goal from centreback Feroz Baharuddin.
Syamer was also named the man of the match after giving an inspirational all-round display with his incisive passing, hard tackling and crucial interceptions.
He said the win was a hard-earned one which will motivate the players to play better in the final against Lebanon on Sunday.
“It was good to get a win for Pau Marti in his first game as national coach. I’m also thrilled to score a goal, which I dedicate to my father who will be celebrating his birthday soon,” said the 26-year-old, who is on-loan with Penang from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).
“It was not the perfect match. We tried something different, and we adapted to it as the game went on. So, we’re happy to get the win.
“Despite falling behind, we stayed calm as time was on our side and we did not rush things. We also took our chances well.
“The final against Lebanon will be even tougher. But we will be out to make up for what we lost last year.”
Syamer has been savouring a resurgence of sorts with Penang and the national team after years of struggling with injuries.
“After going through so many hard times with injuries, I’m glad to prove that I can still play a good game for the country. I’m a player who wants to step up on every occasion.”
