PETALING JAYA: Former national and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) striker Ahmad Hazwan Bakri (pic) is seeking a resurgence in his career after signing for Kuching City as a free agent on Monday.
The 33-year-old veteran, fondly known as Jack, said the move to the Borneo state was an ideal one to achieve his aim due to the Cats coach Aidil Sharin.
“Aidil wanted to bring me on board to help boost the team’s strikeforce. Seeing his work over the years, I’m keen to work with him,” said Hazwan, who has featured for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in the Super League.
“I also believe I can get my career back on track under his guidance.’’
Hazwan, who can play as a number nine or flanker, is expected to add more flair to an attacking unit that already boasts Ivorian striker Tchetche Kipre, Ghanaian hitman Jordan Mintah, Guyana playmaker Keanu Marsh-Brown, Timor Leste forward Pedro Henrique, and wingers Zharmien Asyraf and Nur Shamie Izsuan.
Hazwan was once a feared name in Malaysian football due to his predatory instincts. He has 30 caps with Malaysia, scoring seven goals. His last appearance with Malaysia was in 2019.
In the last five years, Hazman could not recapture his old form because of injuries and lack of first-team action.
In the first transfer window, his plan to move to a new club was scuppered after he suffered a knee injury in December while playing his last match for JDT in the Super League.
Since then, he has focused on recovery and rehabilitation before making his move to Kuching in the second transfer window.
“Now that I am injury free, I want to regain my confidence and form. I also have a mission to help Kuching City achieve their best position this year.’’
Kuching City lie fourth in the Super League with 14 points after nine matches.
