PETALING JAYA: Sabah had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their Super League home match with Terengganu but the result was far from a sore point.
The Rhinos can look forward to more exciting days ahead after their new Brazilian signing Joao Pedro made an impressive debut at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday.
The 24-year-old, who was roped in to replace charismatic forward Ramon Machado, made an instant impact by firing the hosts into an 11th minute lead when he finished off a cross from captain and midfielder Park Tae-su.
Although Nigerian striker Ismaheel Akinade spoiled Sabah’s party when he equalised for Terengganu in the 45th minute, the fans still got their money’s worth thanks to Pedro’s exciting display.
He was a constant menace to the Turtles defence with his relentless pressing and clever movement.
Pedro said he was delighted to have scored on his debut.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better start. We faced a tough opponent and it was a very good match. Now, I can’t wait for our next game,” he said.
Pedro has adapted well to the team as he can speak English, which makes communication easy with the locals.
He also has two compatriots – centreback Gabriel Peres and midfielder Telmo Castanheira – in the squad.
“Being able to settle in quickly helps a lot as I can now focus on helping the team be one of the top sides in the league.”
Sabah remain fourth in the standings with 14 points from nine matches, while Terengganu are third with 16.
