Soccer-Valencia shock Girona 2-0 in first win of the season

VALENCIA, Spain (Reuters) - Girona slumped to a surprise 2-0 defeat at struggling Valencia on Saturday as an own goal by Juanpe and a deflected strike by Dani Gomez within two minutes in the second half gave the hosts a first LaLiga win in six games.

The victory moved Valencia from bottom to 18th on four points, one ahead of Getafe and two ahead of Las Palmas. Last-year's surprise package Girona are 13th on seven points.

Valencia dominated proceedings from early on but managed to break the deadlock only in the 56th minute, when a strike from long range by Gomez deflected off Juanpe and wrong-footed the goalkeeper before finding the back of the net.

Two minutes later, Valencia secured the win with Gomez's strike from the edge of the box, which slightly diverted off an opponent before slotting just inside the left post.
