PETALING JAYA: Haykal Danish Haizon was in top form as he helped Malaysia pull off a stunning upset in the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup 2025 qualifiers.
Oman were the favourites to top Group E, but Harimau Muda led by Juan Torres Garrido, shocked Oman 2-1 in their opening match at the Markazii Tojikiston Stadium in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Saturday.
Winger Haykal was the star of the match, contributing a goal and an assist to help Malaysia start their campaign with three points.
The first goal came in the 31st minute when Haykal sent a well-placed freekick into the penalty box, where centreback D. Moses Raj finished it off.
Haykal then doubled Malaysia’s lead by converting a penalty in the 65th minute. Oman mounted a late comeback, reducing the deficit in the 88th minute when Majid Al-Farsi scored a penalty, but Malaysia held on to secure the win.
This victory is particularly significant, as Middle Eastern teams are traditionally stronger than Malaysia but Garrido’s team showed they are capable of competing against the big teams.
Haykal emphasized the team’s determination.
“We know they are the best team in our qualifying group but we did a great job and fought for every minute of the game,” said the 19-year-old, who plays for Selangor II in the MFL Cup.
“I’m happy to have scored my first goal of the tournament, but I remind myself that I need to stay consistent in every game, in whichever role I’m given to play.
Malaysia will face North Korea next at the Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe today, with Haykal expected to play a key role as the team’s primary attacking threat. North Korea started their campaign by thrashing Sri Lanka 4-0.
Haykal, who watched North Korea’s match, is aware of the challenge ahead.
“We are always ready for any opponent and hope to produce something special. North Korea’s players are physically strong, and you can see the size difference.
“We just need to stay focused defensively and, in attack, make the most of our chances if we want a second win.”
Malaysia failed to qualify for the 2023 edition of the tournament.
